AR:A. Louis Sullivan Archives
Original and research documentation about the life and work of architect Louis Henri Sullivan (1856-1924) comprise the first group of the Architectural Records series. Materials are arranged into seven sections. The contents of files titled by building name relate to various Sullivan architectural designs dating from 1879 to 1922, and contain architectural drawings, correspondence, manuscripts, photographs, and publications [A1]. Several documents illustrate decorative designs, mostly executed for magazine publication during the 1920s [A2]. Other records include original correspondence dating from 1896 to 1922 [A3]; manuscripts and publications by or about Sullivan [A4]; a small number of photographic and sketch portraits [A5]; documentation for an exhibition of Sullivan work held at the Chicago Art Institute in 1956 [A6]; and historical inventories describing the formation and provenance of these archives as well as historical locations of other Sullivan records [A7].
