“Review of *The Drawings of Louis Henry Sullivan: A Catalogue of the Frank Lloyd Wright Collection at the Avery Architectural Library*, by Paul E. Sprague”

by Jill Lever (1980)

Review of Paul E. Sprague's catalogue (foreword by Adolf K. Placzek) of the roughly 120 surviving Sullivan drawings — mostly ornament designs — given by the dying Sullivan to his former draughtsman Frank Lloyd Wright, thirty-nine of which Wright had earlier published in *Genius and the Mobocracy* (1949) and which now reside at Columbia's Avery Architectural Library. Lever praises Sprague's chronological arrangement and scholarly discussion of sources, technique, and style, illustrating the point through Sullivan's Bayard Building ornament and its base-wall-attic functional division, while noting the catalogue could have included more comparative architectural drawings and a checklist of Sullivan holdings elsewhere.
